Professor Layton Does It Again October 4, 2009 evertheoptimist (UK) 38 out of 38 found this review helpful
Being a lady of a certain age, I'm not what you would call a regular gamer, but having found Professor Layton and the Curious Village hugely entertaining and absorbing, this next chapter was a 'must have' purchase for me.
I've just finished the game in 14 hours and for someone who's not known for being the 'sharpest tool in the box', that's not bad going, though I will add, as an aside, thank heaven for 'hint coins' or I'd still be at it.
I'm not going to go into detail about the various puzzles as previous reviewers have covered that, what I will say is that I found this game more enjoyable than the first chapter of Professor Layton's journey.
The thing that struck me most about Professor Layton and The Curious Village was how much the music irritated me, not so in this case, I can honestly say that I don't even remember if there was any background music.
The animation was of a very high standard, the puzzles were a good mix of easy, difficult and downright annoying. The storyline was excellent and I'm not ashamed to admit that I found the ending rather moving, I almost shed a tear *sniff*.I highly recommend this game, it will keep you entertained for hours. I'm very much looking forward to the next chapter.
I gave Professor Layton and Pandora's Box a rating of five stars.
The Prof makes a welcome return. September 26, 2009 DangermouseZilla (Doncaster, Yorkshire, UK.) 115 out of 119 found this review helpful
I am now a few hours into this game and feel I have a good enough experience of it to review it now. If you've played the first game then this will feel familiar. The product illustration for this product has a different title, but I believe that is the American version of the game.
It follows the same method of gameplay with a few tweaks. As before there is a plot to link the various puzzles into a common theme - but the truth is that this is essentially a collection of mini-games. To aid the story we are treated to some animated sequences which are even more impressive than the ones in the first game. In fact, the quality of the animation is so good that you find yourself wanting to watch more - and it wouldn't be surprising if eventually the characters appear in another format such as an animated TV series or film!
Although this is an attractive game, it isn't designed for youngsters. There is a lot of reading and the puzzles can be difficult, very difficult! This is one of those games which you can't help but love even when it's frustrating you to the point that you'd quite happily flush your DS down the toilet.
The background story gives the game an edge over other puzzle type games but you can easily get by if you pay little attention to it, this means that the game is perfect to pick up and play for a little while and doesn't require mammoth playing sessions. To be honest you'll probably require regular breaks from the game!
In a nutshell: A game in the spirit of Nintendo's aim to produce games for those the gaming industry traditionally doesn't appeal to. This game is beautifully crafted and is genuinely brain teasing. Although there are many puzzles, they are varied enough to prevent the overall game from being boring. Too many collections of mini-games start to feel stale as the games begin to look repetitive - but not here, it feels fresh and maintains a level of excitement. A perfect alternative for those who have tired of the Brain Training series of games.
Fantastic Game, easier puzzles but so much more to do September 3, 2009 Jimbo (Manchester) 84 out of 88 found this review helpful
I have just completed this fantastic game and had to let everyone know how marvelous it is. If you are lucky enough to have played the first game then expect more of the same - relentless puzzles and incredible cut scenes (although in this case they are all saved up for the end, but what an end!). If you are new to the Layton franchise then look forward to some ingenious puzzles and some really frustrating, but ultimately satisfying, mini games.
Our adventure starts in London, quickly moves to Paris and then we join the Molentary Express on its journey through to the village of Folsense and it's mysterious secrets. Folsense itself is bigger than St Mystere from the first game and the puzzles are spaced out more, which means more exploration. The puzzles start off rather easy and do seem easier then the first Layton adventure, but the difficult puzzles are obtained once you have mastered the various (really good fun too!)mini games.
The mysteries keep on coming in this game and there are more of the unusual characters we encountered from the first game (including a few old faces, like Granny Riddleton and her puzzle shack).
All in all, expect more of the same in the sequel. This is a game that should be on every discerning DS owners wish list.
Cup of tea anyone?
Mega!!!! July 9, 2010 A. Robson 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Being a non-nerdy 14 year old boy I will review this product to help others. OK I will try not to spoil it.
The Game starts when Prof. laytons teacher dies.
Lots of voice acting and Anime here. A little tutorial thats not to long so if you know what do it is very quick but if you don't know what to do it explains the basics of, travel, exploring, talking to people and hint coins. Thats all u need 5/5
The game has over 150 puzzles and i have done 122 of those in 15 hours. There are no glitches and I have completed the fun, interesting and exciting storyline which has anime, music (not bad) and voice overs quite alot but not all the time.
There extra things to do as well like Laytons Challenges, Weekly Puzzle on Wi-Fi (i think it stopped now), The Hamster, The Camera and the tea making (actually Quite fun).
Conclusion
Fun 5/5
story 6/5 (not a type-o)
Replay Value 2/5
I hope this helps and remember to click thumbs up or whatever it is these days
Absoloutely Brilliant addictive game!! January 27, 2010 **Boredcleverbookwormhere!** (Airdrie, Scotland UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well i got Pandora's box for my Christmas -to go with my DS Lite.I have not played Curious BOx because my muim got mixed up and got me this instead ;).
Well, finished after maybe 2/3 weeks of play, which is a pretty good time, but i did get very addicted and often played for about 6hrs a day, during the holidays!
Even after going through it maybe twice more, i have only got 136 puzzles out of 150, i think.
SOme puzzles, such as the 'Find Tom' one, are obvious, while others are just too hard!! (Cheat website much anyone?)
I found the end great, with lots and lots of twists- i.e you find something out and then its not tru because its impossible, then it is true, then something totally new appears! Quite surprising, and very, very good.
Great characters, and the hamster( My aptly named 'Chubbs' is now very fit- in fact, to thin, maybe hould take him back up to 2? I mean, he looks as if hes anorexic or bulimic or something!!!), and tea minigames(took me aaagggeess to find all ingredients and combinations-but great, inspired and very fun!) are great!
The graphics are great, and not to complicated ( though Katya and her grandad looked like something out of Yu-Gi-Oh!) and the little sequences of video were captivating.
I would do an *in 3 words* thing-buit this deserves more words!!!
So: In 5 wirds:
Addictive, enthralling, (very) clever, inspired, and really, really fun!!! (times like infinity!!)
By (a very bored now i'm done!) Scottish 11yr old girl.
Oh- and i'm looking for Curious Village now too(but i don't want to buy it yet) so im looking out in libraries and rental places now!! (Might just do a review on that when i finish too ;P )
Strarted on Brain Training now- quite Boring after about 3 tests!(And the speaking colours test always comes up!! It never picks it up when i say yellow!!!)
Well bye! Hope this was helpful( like my ramblings ever are- but anyway..)
